How things *do* change...

I am still attempting to find anything credible that even remotely links Charles O'Neill to Madeleine McCann.  It certainly appears as though every article written about the "potential" link stems from a few that came directly from the pen of Antonella Lazzeri.

( I'd like to give a "hats off" to the majority of journalists who reported the conviction of O'Neill in a straightforward and professional way.  Reading through them, it is absolutely clear that O'Neill targeted BOYS.  Very few reporters mentioned Madeleine or Portugal... perhaps 2 or 3 at the most...)

I found it interesting to compare the following two articles written by Antonella Lazzeri and published on June 11, 2010 in The Sun. I cannot find the article on the left online, however, the text was archived on the Factiva database. The article on the right is published on The Sun's website.

(Editing my comments for clarity - did you save the first version of this post???  :)  )

Although the articles appear to be nearly identical, the changes that were made shift the focus from the murder of Allison McGarrigle to the potential connection between O'Neill and Madeleine McCann.  Allison McGarrigle no longer appears in the "lead" paragraph - she is moved down to the second paragraph, the first few sentences focusing solely on Maddie.  This is not only a "propaganda" technique, it is also a technique used to get higher rankings by search engines.  (In SEO article writing, it is recommended to use "keywords" in the title, the first sentence, the last paragraph, and once every 100 words to get top search engine rankings.)

In the first article, Lazzeri claims that O'Neill "was on a hit list of seven paedophiles known to be around the area Maddie went missing from."In the second article "known" becomes "believed to have been in Portugal" and "was thought to be on the Algarve at the time"

I'm aware this is subtle, and could be seen as nitpicking, however having spent months researching Raymond Hewlett, I'd rather not have to pay that type of attention to Charles O'Neill.  I am hoping that other reporters, if they choose to cover the O'Neill/Maddie story, will dig for SOURCES to the allegation O'Neill was in Portugal when Maddie went missing and will not simply repeat the "believed to be in the Algarve at the time" mantra.  WHO believed that?  Where is the proof?

There are other differences, and I'm sure they'll be apparent to anyone comparing the two, so I won't say anything more.

KILLER PAEDO IS MADDIE SUSPECT LIFE FOR MURDER PAEDO WANTED BY MADDIE TECS
AN EVIL paedophile jailed yesterday for killing a brave mum has been linked to Madeleine McCann. Charles O'Neill, bottom right, was found guilty of killing Allison McGarrigle, bottom left, at the High Court in Glasgow. And last night it emerged investigators want to quiz him over missing Maddie, right. He has snubbed repeated attempts by private detectives working for Maddie's family to question him over her disappearance. Beast O'Neill was caged for life yesterday with his gay lover William Lauchlan for killing Allison in Largs, Ayrshire, 1997 after she threatened to report them for abusing a young boy. But he was living in Spain under an assumed name when Maddie was abducted. He is believed to have been in the area of Portugal from where she was snatched on May 3, 2007. Yesterday the official spokesman for Maddie's parents Kate and Gerry McCann confirmed the detectives had not been able to interview O'Neill — who was also found guilty yesterday of grooming a child and sexually assaulting two boys. Spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: "Investigators have been fully aware of him and his background but have not been able to take him any further forward as an active line of investigation." The Scottish Sun first reported the link between O'Neill and Maddie last year. But we were unable to identify him because he was facing trial for Allison's murder. He was on a hit list of seven paedophiles known to be around the area Maddie went missing from. At the time a source close to the Maddie investigation revealed: "His background and where he was living at the time she vanished mean he has been identified as one of around seven suspects they feel should be urgently interviewed". Depraved O'Neill has also been linked to the disappearance of seven-year-old Spanish boy Jeremy Vargas, who went missing from Gran Canaria just two months before Maddie. Jeremy's mother Ithaisa Suarez, 24, and Maddie's mum Kate, 41, from Rothley, Leicestershire, have regularly written to each other since Maddie went missing . Spanish cops have confirmed they want to quiz O'Neill over Jeremy's disappearance. A SERIAL paedophile linked to the Madeleine McCann case was yesterday jailed for life for murder. Charles O'Neill has repeatedly refused to be quizzed by detectives working for Maddie's parents Kate and Gerry. But the private eyes will now try again. O'Neill, 47, is believed to have been in Portugal when Maddie, then three, vanished from an apartment in Praia da Luz on the Algarve in May 2007. Yesterday he was sentenced for killing mum-of-three Allison McGarrigle who threatened to reveal he and gay lover William Lauchlan were abusing a child. Ex-boxer O'Neill and Lauchlan, 33, strangled Allison 13 years ago in Largs, Ayrshire. They dumped her body at sea and it has never been found. The High Court in Glasgow ordered O'Neill to serve a minimum of 30 years and Lauchlan, a minimum of 26 years. They were handed a further 10 years each for abusing two boys aged six and 14. The pair had been jailed in 1988 over 31 charges of drugging and assaulting young children but were freed in 2002. They fled to Spain and set up a cleaning business for holiday apartments. They travelled to Portugal several times. In April 2004 they abducted, drugged and abused a 15-year-old English boy in Spain. O'Neill was still there three years later when seven-year-old Spanish Jeremy Vargus vanished from Gran Canaria.  Two months later Maddie went missing - and O'Neill was thought to be on the Algarve at the time. Jeremy's mother Ithaisa Suarez, 24, and Kate, 41, from Rothley, Leics, have written to each other regularly. Kate and Gerry have also included information about the Jeremy case on their website. Last night the McCanns' spokesman Clarence Mitchell confirmed: "Investigators have been fully aware of O'Neill and his background but have not been able to take him any further forward as an active line of investigation."
